Felicia and her co-counsel obtained a combined jury verdict and equitable relief award after jury trial for the female locomotive engineer in the amount of $1.025 million. The court also ordered AMTRAK to pay an additional award of $350,000 for the engineer's attorney fees. This case, Gotthardt v. National Railroad Passenger Corp. (AMTRAK) 191 F.3d 1148 (9th Cir. 1999), was the first appellate decision in this Circuit holding that the damage cap of 42 U.S.C. $750,000 Settlement for wrongful death and neglect of an elderly woman who died of aspiration. The staff of the nursing home dropped the woman, causing her to fracture her hip. They then ignored her complaints of hip pain for weeks. The elderly woman became depressed from the pain and neglect, and began to refuse to eat, which severely affected her well-being and contributed to her deterioration, and ultimately caused her death by aspiration.
$750,000 Settlement for Elderly Woman against hospital for pressure ulcers and exacerbation of stroke. An elderly woman entered a hospital for treatment from a stroke. The hospital negligently caused her to develop a Stage 4 pressure ulcer on buttocks, by getting her out of bed and leaving her sitting for hours each day on an inappropriate chair. The hospital staff also failed to call the doctor when her blood pressure dropped during dialysis treatment, leading to exacerbation of her stroke.
$750,000 Wrongful Death Settlement Based on Medical Malpractice. A 45 year old woman’s physicians failed to follow up on test results that showed a precancerous condition that would progress to cancer if left untreated, causing the disease to progress, causing the woman’s life two years later.
$700,000 Settlement For Disabled Adult against a group home where she was beaten by a care giver. The plaintiff mentally disabled adult was unable to tell anyone what had happened because of her mental disabilities. The group home blamed the young woman for the injuries, contending that wounds were self inflicted. Pretrial workup showed it was likely that she was beaten with a strap by an overnight care giver.
$525,000 Settlement for Elderly Man against SNF and its physicians For Pressure Ulcers. At the skilled nursing facility, he was left unattended in bed, flat on his back, for long periods of time, which caused him to develop pressure ulcers all over his body. The physicians at the skilled nursing facility held back aggressive treatment for the pressure ulcers because of his advanced age, putting him at risk of losing the leg as the pressure ulcer spread into the muscle and bones.
$650,000 Settlement For Age Discrimination After Pretrial Workup. After a bank forced a 60-year-old woman to retire to make room for younger workers, Felicia secured a $650,000 settlement based on age discrimination.

Confidential Settlement Against Dementia Care Facility in “patient dumping” case. An Oakland dementia care facility repeatedly dumped an elderly woman who had lived at the facility 4 years in the Emergency Room of a hospital because her son had lodged complaints against the Executive Director of the facility. The son had complained that the facility management was recklessly understaffing the facility and engaging in other practices that endangered the residents. The elderly woman suffered transfer trauma as a result of the dumpings and forced relocation, and died within months of being transferred to another care home. After the lawsuit was filed, both the Executive Director and the Vice President of the corporation were terminated, and the corporation sold the facility to a family-run corporation.
Confidential Settlement Against Dementia Care Facility for family who was required to hire “private duty care givers” due to understaffing of the facility. When the family of an elderly resident complained that the staff was neglecting their mother’s needs, the care facility required the family to hire a “private duty” care giver, at the family’s own expense, forcing the family to pay tens of thousands of dollars on top of the exorbitant monthly fees the facility charged. As a result of the lawsuit, the family was able to recovery the extra monies the family had to pay over several years for their mother’s care.
